NEW SPLASH SCREEN
We changed darius's default home page to a new splash screen, where you can select to come here, to user homepages, or to mobius's site. Comments to Andrea are welcome.

OUTGOING MAIL SCANNED FOR VIRUSES
Previously, only incoming mail to darius was scanned for viruses (and spam assassinated). Now, outgoing mail through darius is also scanned for viruses, but no other filtering is performed on it.

VIRUS SCAN
Added a link to the Panda ActiveScan online virus scanner.

SPAM ASSASSIN
We're running Anomy Sanitizer with f-prot on darius. It filters email, checking for viruses, most known exploits and hostile file attachments. Additionally, we're running SpamAssassin, which tags spam with *****SPAM***** in the subject line (plus adds some X-Spam headers for filtering capability). You can customize your own SpamAssassin configuration on darius by editing your ~/.spamassassin/user_prefs file. Do a man on on Mail::SpamAssassin::Conf to see what options are available. Contact the postmaster to have your account whitelisted if you do not want your email filtered through SpamAssassin.

NEW MOTHERBOARD
We determined (painstakingly) that two of the three memory slots on the motherboard were bad. Darius now has a new motherboard with an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ to go along with the 1½ gigs of new memory.

MORE MEMORY
Darius now has 1½ gigs of new memory. We tracked down our previous kernel virtual memory paging problems with newer kernels (> 2.4.18) to a bad stick of the original 1 gig of memory.

HOME PAGE UPDATES
Mobius, Jamie, and Tommy web sites were all recently overhauled. Comments to Andrea are welcome.

WEB SITE UPDATE
Added a weather magnet, calendar, and favorite icon (favicon.ico) to darius's home page.

NEW KERNEL
Darius is now running a 2.4.20 kernel. Soon (in "Andrea time"), we'll be updating to Mandrake 9.
Sunday, January 26, 2003

OLD KERNEL
Darius is back to running a 2.4.18 kernel. We crashed twice recently due to kernel virtual memory paging problems.

DARIUS PICTURE
We updated the picture of darius (and the computer room) on the about page.

NEW KERNEL
Darius is now running a 2.4.19 kernel.

SETI UNITS
On the main menu (left bar), we added the number of SETI units that darius has processed. We updated the Amazon and SETI logos over there, too.

NEW HARD DRIVES
/usr1 on darius died this holiday weekend. We took out the 4 gig F&W SCSI differential drives for /home, /usr1, and /usr2 (12 gigs total), and replaced them with 40 gig IDE 7200 RPM drives for /home and /usr (80 gigs total). Also updated the kernel to 2.4.18.

UPTIME
Darius has been up for over 100 days!

NEW IP ADDRESS
We have a new static IP address from Road Runner. Our ISP's DNS changes will take effect 3:45 a.m. 2/26/2002. It might take a few days to propagate everywhere. So if the darius.mobius-soft.com/mobius.mobius-soft.com names don't work, you can 1) wait a day or two for DNS to be updated; or 2) use the rrcs-sw-24-242-167-6.biz.rr.com name.

NEW KERNEL
Darius is now running the 2.4.17 kernel. This seemed to cure the internal network problems (packet loss) we were having after upgrading to a gig of memory (on a 2.4.8 kernel with high memory support).

GIFT REGISTRY
Check out the gift registry service now on darius. Enter your wish lists! Darius also now has a separate swap disk (2 gigs).
Wednesday, January 9, 2002

MORE MEMORY
Darius is running a gig of memory! (Recompiled kernel for high memory support.) Soon to have a dedicate swap disk, too.
Tuesday, January 1, 2002

VIMRC
Want to get rid of that annoying context sensitive auto indent in vi on Darius? Add this line to your ~/.vimrc file: filetype plugin indent off

NEW NAMESERVERS
Ever since we upgraded to Road Runner (and their nameservers), we haven't been able to resolve a lot of IP addresses to host names. Darius is now using a different set of nameservers for DNS (with the Road Runner ones as secondary). So addresses are resolving into names again. The most prominent place to notice this is the web access logs (and web statistics).

WEBSITE MAKEOVER
We changed our web page presentation. We're using the digital multiplex layout available from OSWD.
Thursday, October 11, 2001

NEW KERNEL
Darius is running a new kernel: 2.4.8
Wednesday, August 15, 2001

DARIUS UPGRADES
Darius has been upgraded to an AMD Duron/Tbird 1333 MHz processor and 512 megs of memory. /home was upgraded from a 2 gig drive to a 4 gig drive. The distribution was upgraded from Debian Potato to Mandrake 8.0 and kernel 2.4.3.
